Real-World Hurricane Performance That Testing Alone Cannot Measure

When Disaster Strikes, Performance Matters

Building products can be tested in laboratories. They can earn certifications, pass engineering evaluations, and receive code approvals. All of those achievements are important. However, the ultimate test of any building system occurs when it faces the full force of Mother Nature.

For more than two decades, the InnovaPanel® Building System has been engineered with one primary objective: creating safer, stronger, and more resilient buildings capable of withstanding some of the harshest environmental conditions on Earth.

The result?

InnovaPanel® 40 – Mother Nature 0

To date, more than forty homes built with InnovaPanel® technology have endured direct exposure to an EF-2 tornado, three Category 5 hurricanes, and one Category 4 hurricane with no reported structural failures and no water intrusion into the building envelope.

While neighboring structures suffered severe damage or complete destruction, InnovaPanel® homes remained standing.

The Lessons Learned from Hurricanes

The InnovaPanel® story did not begin in a laboratory.

It began in the aftermath of some of the most destructive hurricanes in American history.

Hurricane Andrew (1992)

When Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida, Jerry Gillman was actively involved in the recovery effort. He inspected and estimated damage on thousands of homes throughout South Dade County and participated in the repair and reconstruction of more than 150 hurricane-damaged residences.

The experience provided a rare opportunity to study exactly how and why homes fail during extreme wind events.

Repeatedly, the same weaknesses appeared:

  • Structural connection failures
  • Roof failures
  • Water intrusion
  • Air infiltration
  • Impact damage
  • Thermal inefficiencies
  • Poor load-path design

These observations would later become the foundation of the InnovaPanel® Building System.

Hurricane Charley (2004)

Twelve years later, Hurricane Charley struck Southwest Florida.

Gillman was among the first contractors involved in recovery efforts on North Captiva Island, where he secured more than 50 heavily damaged homes and ultimately performed over $5 million in hurricane-related repairs.

Again, the same pattern emerged.

Many conventional construction methods failed in predictable ways under extreme wind loading.

The question became clear:

Why rebuild the same way if there is a better way?

That question ultimately led to the development of the InnovaPanel® Building System.

Hurricane Dorian: The Ultimate Test

In September 2019, Category 5 Hurricane Dorian struck the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas.

With sustained winds of 185 mph and estimated gusts exceeding 220 mph in some locations, Dorian became one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin.

The storm stalled over the northern Bahamas for nearly 40 hours, subjecting structures to prolonged Category 5 conditions.

The result was catastrophic:

  • More than 75% of homes on Great Abaco suffered severe damage or destruction.
  • Entire communities were devastated.
  • Thousands were left homeless.
  • At least 74 lives were lost.
  • Storm surge reached an estimated 18–23 feet in some areas.

Yet one home built using the InnovaPanel® Building System stood high on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite being directly exposed to the storm’s fury, the structure survived with only minor cosmetic damage to exterior finishes.

No structural failure.

No water intrusion.

No collapse.

While neighboring buildings were destroyed, the InnovaPanel® home remained standing.

Beyond Testing: Proven in the Real World

Laboratory testing validates engineering.

Code approvals validate compliance.

Real-world performance validates everything.

The InnovaPanel® Building System has been tested by:

✔ EF-2 Tornadoes

✔ Category 4 Hurricanes

✔ Category 5 Hurricanes

✔ Wind-Driven Rain

✔ Extreme Coastal Conditions

✔ Decades of Field Experience

The results continue to demonstrate the value of designing buildings not just to meet code, but to exceed expectations.

There Is a Better Way to Build Everything®

For homeowners, builders, architects, engineers, and developers seeking a stronger, more resilient building system, InnovaPanel® offers a proven alternative to conventional construction.

When the next storm arrives, the difference between surviving and rebuilding may come down to the decisions made before construction begins.

Build stronger.

Build smarter.

Build more resilient.

InnovaPanel®

Faster. Easier. Better.
